To restore the load-bearing capacity of a parking garage slab affected by severe steel corrosion, solidian GRID was applied as an approved supplementary reinforcement solution in combination with cathodic corrosion protection, without closing the lower parking levels.
The parking garage Dammstraße in Ludwigshafen showed significant corrosion damage in the upper layer of steel reinforcement. Chloride-contaminated concrete had led to a reduction in load-bearing capacity and required structural strengthening of the slab.
A complete replacement of the slab would have resulted in the closure of the parking levels below and significant operational downtime. Therefore, an alternative strengthening solution had to be implemented while keeping the structure in service.
For the first time, approved solidian GRID reinforcement was applied as a supplementary reinforcement and statically accounted for according to the new regulation.
After removing the damaged upper concrete layer, a new concrete overlay was applied, reinforced with solidian GRID as a replacement for the removed reinforcement layer. In addition, a cathodic corrosion protection system (CCP) with titanium mixed-oxide mesh anodes was installed to secure the remaining load-bearing capacity of the existing steel reinforcement.
The compatibility of the carbon reinforcement with the cathodic corrosion protection system was verified – no interference between the systems was detected.
