When it comes to the durability of screed, one question is becoming increasingly important: Are fibers alone enough to protect the floor from cracks and deformation? The answer is simple – they are not.
What (don’t) fibers do in screed?
Synthetic fibers, especially polypropylene (PP), are often added to screed mixes. Their main role is to control shrinkage and reduce microcracks during the initial drying phase. However, fibers are not reinforcement. They are additives – not a system that carries load.
PP fibers have a lower density than screed, which often causes them to float toward the surface. This further reduces their effectiveness in the one place where strength is needed – the middle of the screed layer, where stress builds up.
